Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities
With respect to a healthcare practice, all people in Ontario are protected by the following:
- The Human Rights Code (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90h19)
- The Occupational Health and Safety Act (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90o01)
- The Patient’s Bill of Rights (https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-38/session-1/bill-22).

Every resident in Ontario has the following rights:
- The right to receive all necessary health care services in a health care system that,
- Is accessible, universal, comprehensive and publicly administered and funded
- Offers freedom of choice,
- Provides timely treatment,
- Does not allow personal income to determine access to health care services, and
- Recognizes that every provider of health care services is a valued member of a multidisciplinary health care team
- The right to give or refuse consent to the provision of health care services.
- The right to all information necessary to make fully informed health care choices, including information about who will provide particular services and about the qualifications of those providers.
- The right to receive publicly funded health care of high quality in the home and in the community as well as in health care facilities.
- The right to receive information, whether in a health care facility or in the community, about choices that promote good health and measures that prevent illness and accident.
- The right to be dealt with by health care service providers
- With courtesy and respect,
- In a manner that recognizes individual dignity and privacy and promotes individual autonomy,
- In a manner that recognizes and responds to individual needs and preferences, including those based on ethnic, spiritual, linguistic, familial and cultural factors.
Patient’s also have responsibilities, or, the ability to respond.

This includes a safe space for all people who are patients visiting and for all people working within her clinic or workshop spaces.

In the sacred space of VHI service we respect and have considerate care for one another. Patient responsibilities include:
- Rights and responsibilities (ability to respond) belong to all people.
- All people will be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect – inappropriate behavior which is disrespectful and harmful will not be tolerated.
- Truth is a value respected by all – patients will provide complete and truthful history and check-ins when answering questions so they can be better served
- People actively participate in their healthcare – each individual will do the best they can to complete care plans/exercises; ask questions when information is unclear
- Communication will be clear – patients will clearly express concerns, ask questions and inform the office if they cannot keep appointments, or have trouble remembering or following
- Individuals paying fee for service will settle all balances owing on completion of service, or, they will arrange an agreed upon co-creative payment plan prior to service
- All individuals will be mindful of infection control and safety policies. If you have an infectious illness, please stay home until you are no longer infectious. There are many people in the practice at high risk.
- Individuals understand the common waiting area is accessible to the general public. Therefore, while waiting for, during and following your appointment – you will be responsible for all your personal belongings.
